Five Fun Oyster Facts

It’s well known by oyster-lovers everywhere that oysters are delicious, but did you know that oysters improve the quality of the water around them by filtering out algae and excess nutrients? What about the fact that oysters can change their sex? This week, we’ll enlighten you with some very interesting and fun oyster facts.

Five Fun Oyster Facts

Oysters are Healthy

We’ve blogged about this before, but it’s worth repeating. Oysters are very healthy. They have plenty of vitamins like A, C, D, and B-12. They also have tons of minerals. In fact, “Eating four oysters a day gives you a complete daily supply of copper, iodine, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, and zinc.

Oysters Clean the Water

Oysters clean up the water by removing sediment, nutrients, and algae (which consumes a lot of oxygen) to make for a more oxygenated, clean and clear underwater ecosystem. Oyster reefs also help protect against erosion.

You Can Use Oysters in Your Garden

Oyster shells have a lot of calcium in them, which balances the pH in the soil and makes for healthier plants. You can buy shells that are already ground up, or break up the leftovers after the next time you get oysters.

Oysters Can Change Their Sex

Oysters can change from male to female. Younger oysters are generally male, but by the time their two years old, most oysters change to female. But, if there are too many females in the population, oysters can also switch back to male to boost the population.

Oysters Can Survive in Times of Low Oxygen

Low oxygen levels are bad for most sea creatures. Oysters need oxygen too, but they can survive better in times of low oxygen than other creatures. They’ll close their shell and open it up once in awhile to test the water. If it’s not suitable, they’ll wait until oxygen levels are better to open up again.
