Interesting Sushi Facts

The Order in Which You Eat Your Sushi Matters

By this, we mean the order in which you eat your sushi can affect how it tastes. Of course, you’re free to eat it in any order you like, but by eating it in a certain order, you can maximize the amount of flavor and taste the sushi has. By starting with the least flavorful fish and moving on to the most flavorful, you ensure that the strong flavors don’t overpower the weaker ones, making for a more flavorful experience overall. The best way to do this is to start with white fish, then move to silver, then red, then to heavier fish like salmon and salmon roe. Eat the fattiest fish, such as tuna, last for the maximum flavor.

Watch Where You Rub Your Chopsticks Together

Many people rub their chopsticks together after they brake them apart to break off little pieces of wood that are left behind. But if you do this in a high-end Japanese sushi restaurant, the chef will think you’re telling him that the utensils are cheap. Worth knowing if you’re ever in Japan!

How to Cure Wasabi Burn

Put a little too much wasabi on that roll? Don’t breathe through your mouth. Instead breathe through your nose. The burn should go away fairly quickly.

How to Cleanse Your Palette

Use ginger to cleanse your palette in between eating different kinds of fish, that’s what it’s there for!

Tuna Overload

There are six different cuts of tuna used in sushi rolls. They are: se-kami, se-naka, se-shimo, hara-kami oh-toro, hara-naka chu-toro, and hara-shimo.
