Crab Season Begins, Oyster Season Extends in Maryland

The moment countless Marylanders wait for every year is finally here. Blue crab season has begun in Maryland! Commercial crabbers can now begin harvesting blue crabs in the Chesapeake Bay. However, water temperatures are still a little too cold for crabs to be active in the bay, so it’s more likely that crabbing will begin in earnest on the bay towards the end of the month. Still, it’s good to know that fresh Maryland blue crabs are on their way.

In addition to the beginning of crab season, Marylanders are also enjoying an extended oyster season. The Department of Natural Resources extended oyster season from it’s normal April 1st deadline to April 14th, as a result of cold temperatures that caused the bay to freeze over in February and made oyster harvesting impossible for the area’s commercial fishermen.
