What is Omega-3?

Omega-3 is the name for a fatty acid which is considered to be an essential fatty acid, meaning that we need them for our bodies to work normally. There are three types of Omega-3 fatty acids: alpha-Linolenic acid (ALA), found in plant oils, and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), both of which are commonly found in certain fish. Salmon, trout, tuna and sardines have all been shown to contain high amounts of Omega-3’s.

There are numerous health benefits to a diet rich in Omega-3’s. The Omega-3’s EPA and DHA have been found to have more health benefits than APA, which means a diet rich in fish brings with it the following health benefits.

DHA alone has been shown to reduce triglycerides, or blood fat. Lower levels of fat in the blood reduces the risk for heart disease. Studies have found that EPA and DHA when combined reduce stiffness and joint pain as well as boost the effectiveness of anti-inflammatory drugs, which is very beneficial for those with arthritis. These acids abilities to reduce inflammation may also be useful in treating asthma. Evidence suggests they may also be beneficial in nurturing prenatal health.

Not only do Omega-3’s have many physical benefits, they have also been shown to improve mental health. Research suggests that people who eat more Omega-3’s are less likely to be depressed. The acids may boost the effects of antidepressants and help reduce depressive symptoms in bipolar disorder. Preliminary research suggests that Omega-3’s may also be useful in fighting memory loss, Alzheimer’s, dementia, and ADHD.
