Catering in Catonsville

The invitations have been sent, and your friends and family have sent back their RSVP, well now what? Hire someone to cater the event of course! However, before the date of your gathering, a few key factors need to be covered.

How Much Food?banquet table

An accurate head count is the first step in planning your party. It is important to know how many people will attend so you do not run out of food. GASP! Imagine the horror on your guest’s faces when there is no more food left for them. Rounding up a little is a good idea because there may always be a last minute addition and some people tend to eat a little more than the average person does. However, you do not want to round up too much and be left with a ton of food you will not eat. If you are plan on serving the food buffet style, keep in mind people tend to eat more than if a tray is passed around.

In addition, the length of your party is also an important fact to consider. The longer the party is, the more food will need to be provided because the guests may get hungry again.

Below is a guide of how much food is suggested per person based on the type of event you are having.

Breakfast:

  • When catering breakfast you should consider that each guest will drink two beverages on average, such as coffee, tea, juice, etc.
  • If you’re only serving pastries, plan on two pieces per person.
  • An entrée should be about five ounces, served with bread and two other sides. Fruit is an excellent thing to add to the breakfast menu.

Lunch:

  • If you’re planning on an entrée, begin with 2-4 appetizers per person followed by a five ounce dish that is accompanied with 2-3 sides, including a starch and dessert.
  • If sandwiches are in the menu, plan to have two per person.
  • Offer a selection of drinks including, juice, water, soda and possibly beer.

Dinner:

  • Provide a multitude of beverages such as water, soda, juice, alcohol, etc.
  • Offer a small portion of bread, salad or soup.
  • If you aren’t offering an entrée, plan on 10-15 appetizers per person. If it’s going to be buffet style, consider a few more.
  • The main entrée should be 5-7 oz. and accompanied with two sides such as vegetables, beans or a starch.

Dessert:

  • Offer cake, pastries, etc. If you are providing more options, consider smaller portions. Consider 1-3 servings per person.
  • Most people drink coffee or tea after or with dessert, so plan on serving some.

Party Favorites

Consider what food and drink options will be more popular than others are, order more of those. Everyone is going to want to get a bite of that tasty dish, make sure they get a chance to try it. The same goes for beverages, make sure the guests get a chance to sip the delicious drink everyone is raving about.

Serve Safely

What’s worse than running out of food? Sending the guests home with a stomach bug. It is important not to leave the food sitting out for too long. Cut up fruits, cooked plates, dips or other items that need to be refrigerated remain at room temperature for no more than two hours for maximum safety. If the food will be out for longer than two hours, serve them over a bed of ice or a chafing dish to keep the foods at their suggested temperature.
